Heads up St Pete!!!

Cops are cracking down again on cyclists in the city.
The SPBC ride was visited by 8 police cars with video cameras
corralling  riders into single file on the side of the rode and pulling
over quite a few for riding 3 abreast after getting
bunched up from the slowdown from the police blockade.

$165 ticket for rolling a red light!!!

Well, this is nothing new unfortunately.  The crackdown is on
cyclists and not on motorists that come within 3 feet of a
cyclist or fail to yield the right of way or… ahem, kill a cyclist.

St Pete Times will be running a story on the situation tomorrow
so stay tuned.  Though I am sure the comments section will be
depressing as usual.

Here it is:

Gotta love the comments.

And of course we have the new bike lane law to look forward to:

Effective September 1, 2010:
Section 6. Subsections (5) and (20) of section 316.2065, Florida Statutes, are amended to read:
316.2065 Bicycle regulations.—
(5)(a) Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall ride in the lane marked for bicycle use or, if no lane is marked for bicycle use, as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except under any of the following situations:
1. When overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction.
2. When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
3. When reasonably necessary to avoid any condition, including, but not limited to, a fixed or moving object, parked or moving vehicle, bicycle, pedestrian, animal, surface hazard, or substandard-width lane, that makes it unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge. For the purposes of this subsection, a “substandard-width lane” is a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and another vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.

I have been seeing many photos of some serious
schwag(prizes not the pot) to be had.
With the popo cracking down in St Pete, what a
better time to go race around the streets
of TAMPA and have a good time with other cyclists.

We will see you there!!!
